What is Blood Urea Nitrogen (BUN)?

The Blood Urea Nitrogen (BUN) test measures the amount of urea nitrogen found in your blood. Urea nitrogen is a normal waste product created after your body breaks down proteins from the food you eat. The process begins in the liver, where proteins are broken down to form ammonia. The liver quickly converts this toxic ammonia into urea, which is then released into the blood.

Your kidneys filter urea out of the blood and excrete it through urine. Because the kidneys are responsible for clearing urea, measuring the concentration of urea in your blood provides important clues about how well your kidneys and liver are functioning.

Normal BUN levels vary somewhat depending on age, gender, and the specific laboratory performing the test. Generally, as we age, kidney function naturally declines slightly, which means that normal BUN ranges are slightly higher for older adults.
